He grew up in the London area and went to Whitgift Middle School, which was a private all boys school in Croydon. His keen intellect and love of science led him to pursue both an undergraduate and PHD degree at the University College London. It was at University College London that he met his vivacious bride-to-be, Miriam, who was also working on her PHD. Derek’s PHD was in Biochemistry and Miriam’s was in Microbiology. They had a wonderful marriage of nearly 60 years which was full of love, laughter and friendship. They bonded over their enjoyment of jazz music, and their interesting discussions of science, history and art.

After his PHD, Derek worked in Ottawa at Agriculture Canada. It was in Ottawa that his eldest daughter, Karen was born. Then, they headed to the USA where Derek worked at Yale University, New Haven. A few years later, they moved on to the University in Rochester, New York and their second daughter, Jacqueline, was born. Then, the family headed off on the New Amsterdam Ocean Liner to England. The family settled in the suburb of Billericay, Essex, and from here, Derek commuted by train to his job at Queen Mary College in London. It was in England, that their son, Gary was born. When, Gary was one, the family headed back to Canada. They moved into 301 King Street West where they have lived for over 50 years. That year, in 1965, Derek started working at Queen’s University as a professor in the Chemical Engineering Department. He was a dedicated professor whose caring support was appreciated by his both his undergrad and graduate students.

Throughout his life, Derek was a kind, devoted, loving and fun dad to Karen, Jackie and Gary. He instilled a love of being active and enjoying life in his children; he could often be seen playing badminton or swimming with the children in the backyard. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, Jessica, Alex and Logan. He was a fun and lively participant in family board game nights. He also enjoyed playing soccer and croquet with them in the backyard, and instilled his love of the Tour de France and Premier League Soccer in both his children and grandchildren.

After retiring from Queen’s University in 1996, Miriam and Derek loved to go for long walks by the lake, relax and enjoy lattes in downtown Kingston cafes, read and listen to music. Derek was a lifelong learner who loved to read about science, history, art and music. He loved to pump his Jazz music up high and either relax and listen to it in the living room or dance around to the beat. He also had time in his retirement to enjoy his passion for gardening and had a beautiful, colourful flower garden.
