LEACY, DR. J.W.B."BILL"

With heavy hearts we announce that James William (Bill) Buckly Leacy, passed away in his sleep after a long battle with cancer on New Year’s Eve 2015. Son of William James and Sadie (nee Flynn) Leacy and older brother to Paul (all deceased).

Born in Montreal on August 8th 1935, Bill later moved with his family to Prescott. He was accepted into the Queen’s University School of Medicine and graduated with the Class of 1960. He married the love of his life Barbara Anne (nee Moore, deceased November 7th 2012) in 1958. Barbara gave birth to twins Leslie and Billy and Carol (Gump) followed six years later.

Bill entered into family medicine and for over 45 years he enjoyed caring for thousands of families in the Kingston area. His children were proud to hear from kids at school that “your dad is my doctor-what a good doctor and nice guy”. Bill was the team doctor for the New York Rangers and Oakland Seals when they held training camps in Kingston in the 60s. He also worked with Jr. Canadians when the franchise relocated to Kingston in the 70s. Bill retired from family medicine in 2009. In 2011, he began working one morning a week at Corrections Canada before retiring again in June of last year.
An early adopter to distance running for fitness, Bill could be seen training around Kingston and completed both the Ottawa and Buffalo marathons in the late 70s. He was an avid skier and golfer and a long- time member at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club. He stopped playing in 2009 to focus on caring for Barbara when she became ill. Bill was a life- long learner and even in retirement studied medical journals when not reading other materials. He was a humble, private man who was most happy when surrounded by family and friends. The family Christmas Eve Open House was his favourite.

We would like to thank Dr. Matthews, Tracy and Michelle and the team at the Kingston Cancer Centre, as well as Drs. Stephanie Connidis and Roddy Davey from Palliative Care. We are also grateful for the wonderful skilled help of many nurses and personal support workers.

Dad will be remembered as a wonderful father and husband and missed forever by his children Leslie, Bill, “Gump” (and son in law Jon Dietrich).

A reception to pay respects is being held at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club on Friday January 29th from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy can be made to the Queen’s University Medical Excellence Fund.

On line condolences with Sharing Memories at www.gftompkinscentral.ca
