MacDonald, Rita Mary (née Greenwood)
February 9th, 1917-September 20, 2015

An insightfully intelligent, loving woman with an indomitable spirit and deep love of family has left us.

Rita MacDonald died peacefully at Milton District Hospital, in Milton, Ontario, on September 20th, 2015, in her 98th year. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Leo C. MacDonald. Throughout his career as a mining engineer, and throughout their married life, she remained a strong and supportive partner. Rita was the honoured, respected and much loved mother of Carol (Martin Groenewegen); JoAnne (Bryan Manulak); Rory MacDonald (Nancy Harbour); Jean (John Courtney); Sheila (Sandy Kenyon) and Theresa MacDonald.

She was predeceased by her parents, Catherine (Kathleen) and Maxim Greenwood of Wolfe Island, and she was the last surviving member of that family having been predeceased by her sisters: Violet (Johnson); Irene (Kingsley); Agnes (Nolan); Catherine (Kay) (Doyle); Merilda (Moulton); and her brothers George Greenwood and D.J. Greenwood.

She leaves her much loved grandchildren, Karen, David, Cathy and Lisa (Groenewegen); Joel and Jake (Courtney); and Sara (Kenyon) and her great grandchildren Connor, Courtney, Sloane, Hudson, Ella, Reade, and Avery.

She also leaves behind her dear nieces and nephews in her extended Greenwood family.

All of us remaining behind are left with indelible memories of her wonderful smile, her humour, her determination, her pride in herself and her family, her independence of mind and her great common sense. She was the oral historian of her Greenwood family and of our own MacDonald family. She was a remarkable woman who retained these qualities throughout her last days.

The family would like to thank Drs. Wong and Wilson of the Milton District Hospital for their great care, and also the nursing and supportive staff at the hospital for their assistance.

The family would also like to express their appreciation to Birkdale Place in Milton where Rita enjoyed many happy days since her arrival there in March, 2013. Thank you to the nursing staff there, including Rita, Charlotte, and Lily, and all care workers who looked after her so well. In particular, we wish to thank Mom's daily early morning care worker, Nakia.

We wish to express our special thanks to Mom's own personal careworkers, Donna Hallyburton and Hayley Humenick, who made her days at Birkdale safe and enjoyable. She loved your company and appreciated your great care.

Visitation at the GORDON F. TOMPKINS FUNERAL HOME - Central Chapel, 49 Colborne Street (at Clergy St.) on Thursday, September 24th from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Mary’s Cathedral on Friday, September 25th at 10:00 a.m. Rite of Committal in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations in memory of Rita to St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston or to Sacred Heart of Mary Church, Wolfe Island would be appreciated by the family.
